Nippon Judo Schools was born out of a passion for Judo and education by our founder, Johan Boshoff.
“Our club was built on sweat, tears and laughter.
If you want to cry, cry now, not at the matches!
I want you to enjoy judo and there is more enjoyment in victory than in defeat……
So lets train!”
6th Dan Black Belt
Johan spent his childhood in South Africa, coached by his mentor and “second dad” Kokkie Uys.
Through Kokkie, Johan developed a love for the sport of judo and gained insight in the benefits the sport brings to its participants. These benefits not only extend to those who compete, but for many others involved in other aspects of the sport whether it be through recreation, administration duties or being proud parents of participants.
After emigrating to New Zealand in 2000, Johan started Nippon Judo Schools on Auckland’s North Shore and initially, all classes were run at schools.
When some players became competitive, combined training times at a central venue was required, so a permanent dojo was found. Form there, the club went from strength to strength.
Now, our main dojo is at 877 East Coast Road, Torbay with many sessions run at various schools on Aucklands North Shore and in West Auckland.
